Cotopaxi National Park – Full-Day Tour from Quito
Our Cotopaxi full-day tour from Quito takes us south through the Andean highlands toward one of Ecuador’s most iconic protected areas.
We’ll leave Quito in the morning, around 8:00 AM, heading south through the Andean highlands toward Cotopaxi National Park. Along the way, we’ll make a short stop at a viewpoint south of Quito for a different perspective of the capital before continuing into the countryside.
As we leave the city behind, the landscape gradually changes from urban surroundings to open Andean valleys and high-altitude páramo.
An Andean Family Experience
Before entering the higher areas of the national park, we’ll visit a traditional Andean family. Here, we’ll have the opportunity to see some of the animals that are part of rural life in the Ecuadorian highlands, including llamas.
This short visit gives us a closer connection to the local way of life before continuing toward the volcano.
Cotopaxi Volcano and José Rivas Refuge
We’ll continue ascending through the páramo toward the José Rivas Refuge, located at approximately 4,850 meters above sea level.
As we gain altitude, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. From this area, we’ll admire the surrounding Andean landscape and, when conditions allow, get closer to the snow and glacier-covered slopes of Cotopaxi.
The high altitude makes this part of the experience especially impressive, as we experience firsthand the changing landscape of the volcano.
Limpiopungo Lagoon
We’ll then descend to Limpiopungo Lagoon, at approximately 3,896 meters above sea level.
Surrounded by the páramo and with Cotopaxi as its backdrop, this is one of the most scenic areas of the national park. We’ll have time to appreciate the landscape and look for native Andean birds and wildlife, including Andean teal, Andean coots, lapwings and caracaras.
The area also offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the quiet atmosphere of the high-altitude páramo.
Mariscal Sucre Visitor Center
Our next stop will be the Mariscal Sucre Visitor Center, where we’ll learn more about the unique páramo ecosystem and the natural processes that shape this environment.
We’ll discover more about the different stages of the páramo, the formation of springs and the importance of the lagoons and water sources found throughout this high-altitude landscape.
Lunch and Return to Quito
After exploring Cotopaxi National Park, we’ll have time for lunch at a local restaurant (not included) before beginning our journey back to Quito.
We’ll return to the capital in the afternoon, carrying with us a day of volcanic landscapes, Andean culture and unforgettable high-altitude scenery.
